Automation Engineer

ABOUT THIS POSITION

 

The Automation Engineer works at the Engineering Test Lab. The basic function of the automation position is to support the maintenance and development of test stands. This includes both data acquisition and control. In addition to test stand support, the candidate must provide basic electronic and software support for miscellaneous applications in the lab. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication skills (both verbal and written), the ability to interface with diverse individuals, and possess strong planning and organizational abilities.

 

Preferred Education:

Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited university. Typical candidates will have a degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering. Other technical degrees with the appropriate combination of experience will be considered.

 

Preferred Work Experience:

Applicable work experience will also be considered. 2-5 years of related engineering experience in design, assembly and maintenance of automated test/manufacturing equipment and data acquisition. Experience in electronics simulation, manufacturing automation, automobile or commercial vehicle industry would be beneficial.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Design new test stands.
  • Specify electronic and mechanical hardware for new test applications and for upgrade of existing applications.
  • Select various forms of instrumentation and use them.
  • Write, upgrade, and troubleshoot test software (RSLOGIX and NI LabVIEW).
  • Make electrical schematics.
  • Provide input on mechanical layouts.
  • Develop test stand design concepts.
  • Perform typical administrative requirements (stock requisitions, tool sheets, expense reports, capital expense projects, etc.).
  • Perform validation testing.
  • Support APQP activities.
  • Perform "special assignments" as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & DESIRED SKILLS

 

  • Understanding of electrical schematics
  • Familiarity with industrial wiring (from 3 phase down to DC signal)
  • Expert operation of benchtop tools: multimeter, oscilloscope, power supply, etc
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical circuits
  • Familiarity with software version control systems, such as Subversion and GIT
  • Able to write software in NI LabVIEW and RSLOGIX
  • Familiar with National Instruments cDAQ and cRIO product lines
  • Familiar with typical automation equipment: air cylinders, air valves, switches, DIN, terminal blocks, fusing, enclosures, etc.
  • Operation of basic office equipment and software (MS Office)
  • Eceptional interpersonal skills
  • National Instruments TestStand and DIAdem
  • CAD experience (especially NX)
  • PCB design tools (Mentor Graphics and SPICE)
  • Controller Area Network (CAN especially the SAE J1939 protocol)
  • Familiarity with text based programming languages like C, C++, C# and Python

  • Color perception and vision requirements
